Ensuring safe toys
Our commitment to safety standards
NEN (Stichting Koninklijk Nederlands Normalisatie Instituut) is an institute that connects interested parties and ensures that they reach agreements. These agreements are laid down in standards and guidelines. They do this in national and/or international standards committees.
A few times a year NEN organizes a meeting. Toi-Toys is part of the NEN and recently we attended a NEN standard committee meeting to discuss the EN71 guidelines. An important step in staying aligned with evolving safety standards.
EN 71 is the European standard that ensures toys sold in the EU are safe for children to use. These standards cover everything from mechanical safety and flammability to the presence of chemicals and labeling requirements. While they might sound technical, they’re ultimately about one simple thing: making sure children can play safely. What makes this especially important for us is that we don’t just follow EN 71, we contribute to its development. As part of the national standards committee, we have a seat at the table to help shape how these rules evolve. That means we can share our industry experience, raise concerns early, and stay ahead of upcoming changes.
At this moment, updated versions of several EN 71 guidelines are on the way, with clearer language and improved test methods. For us, staying involved means staying informed, and ensuring that the toys we work with not only meet the current requirements but help set the bar for toys safety going forward.
